Wenzong
and Zhenying were my college classmates-turned brother and sister.
Forty years have gone by and I still miss them dearly. Early nineteen
sixties were the years in China when political grip loosened a
little bit to allow people to cope with hunger and famine across
the country. Ball parties were often held in the weekend on the
campus, and Wenzong and Zhenying were usually there. I never went
to the ball with them, but they were always by my side when they
saw I needed something. In my third year at college, I bought
a grandfather type used typewriter for 70 yuan—an astronomical
figure for me at the time. It was purchased after repeated shop
visits and many second thoughts, and after a classmate loaned
me 30 yuan to add to the 40 yuan that Mother had
remitted to me. That big debt of 30 yuan was later paid
off for me, before graduation and without my prior knowledge,
by none other than Brother Wenzong and Sister Zhenying.

我忘不了大学的同学文宗与箴英。四年同窗,他们把我当弟弟。我还记得七十块钱买的那架二十年代的Royal牌的英文打字机。钱是妈妈变卖家俱凑来的,还有文宗箴英的。
