(3) Trip 2007: our alley (3) 二○○七年中国行：家门口的小巷

I am dedicating this one page to the alley where our home used to be, and where I spent most of my childhood. To me, the alley rings with a lot of memories. I remember meeting my grandpa when he was walking home, me trying hard to reach at his long, silvery, beard. I remember playing with other children of my age, who are now in the sixties too. I remember coming home on a bicycle from work and seeing my young child, Hong, and hearing his shrieking voice: "Dad!"

Some new buildings have sprung up, many old folks are gone, but the alley remains the same: still narrow, still quite clean, and still reminiscent of my childhood memories.

在这一页，我要专门记录我老家门口的小巷。当时家里小，没得玩，我的许多童年时光，就逍磨在家门口的这条小巷。我记得小时候看到“阿公”(爷爷)，冲过去跳着想要抓他的白胡子。我记得在门口玩跟我玩的左邻右舍的孩子。这些人现在都是六十多岁了。我还记得骑自行车从任教的白水中学回来，才到巷口就被儿子庄宏认出，就听到他的高八度的尖锐的童声喊“爸”。

现在，很多老人不见了，很多楼房升了起了。巷子依然窄，却也依然干净。而且，记忆犹存。

This is the entrance to our alley. It's too small for a single car to get through. So we have to stop outside the alley, and walk, or use a pedicab. The day I arrived, after an absence of 12 years, I could not find my way here. What a shame!		这是去我们家的小巷，小到汽车进不去。只能步行，或雇三轮车。一别十二年，我竟然乍地认不出这个巷口了。真不应该。
This is neighbors on our left.		这是我们家左边的巷子和邻居(左邻也)。
This is our alley on our left. On the far right there is a pedicab. Many who are unemployed use pedicab as their means of earning a living. In our alley alone, there are three pedicab riders.		这是我们家左边的巷子。稍远处的右手边可见到一辆人力三轮车。石码镇谋生的三轮车有好几百辆。单单我们这条小巷就有三辆。

This is our home. It was rebuilt by my brother after I left for USA.		这是我们的家。是我们离开以后我弟弟盖的。
This is inside our home, in the living-room.		这是家里一进门的客厅。
Gabage is picked up twice a day, free of charge. Paper, metal and other used appliance can be sold for cash at door. In the States. we pay $20 a month for lesser service. (For large appliance, each piece to send away can cost the owner $50.)		推手推车的清洁工每天早晚两次把垃圾袋拣走。一切免费。废纸、破铜烂铁、旧家电在门口都可以卖掉。在美国，垃圾一星期收一次。可回收的物品两星期收一次。不仅免费送人，一个月还得交二十块美金。
