Life in a small town like Shima is not great, not fancy, but is very convenient.  Vendors come to your door, and neighborhood stores are close-by.   You can get all things you need, food, medicine, and other items just with a few minutes' walk out to the streets. And they are mostly inexpensive.  One Chinese yuan (equivalent of $0.25) would buy me four buns, or bread, enough for my breakfast (but I will also need a small bag of milk, costing about two quarters).   Besides, there is no frozen meat.  Everything is fresh.   See photos here, and on the page dedicated to my mom.

Peasants form neighboring villages brought their produce to Shima, lined up the streets, and formed the market.

来自四乡的农民把他们的蔬菜水果带到石码来,在约定俗成的街道两旁摆摊,就成了市场。

In little towns like Shima, pot holes can be seen everywhere..
有些地段街道的路面坑坑洼洼,破烂不堪。

Cleaning crew use blooms and hand-pulled carts to keep the streets as tidy as possible.

但街道有人打扫,垃圾有人拣,还算干净
