Our family
went to the beach the first weekend of June 2004. It had the lowest
tide in a decade and was supposed to be ideal for clam digging.
But the rain had defeated all our clamming and crabbing ambitions,
so we stayed indoors most of the time.
However, it was still a good vacation, for we
relaxed, rested, and got to watch a lot of TV coverage on America's
40th President Ronald Reagan. I adored President Reagan for two
things in particular. One, before the fall of the Berlin wall,
the feelings he showed when he spoke of the courage and suffering
of people behind the iron curtains. Two, the decision he made
as soon as he was diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease.
