The four pictures here all show the bridge that
spans across Nine-Dragon River. The first picture on the
top is actually the largest. It was stitched together
with three photos, using Canon's PhotoStitch.

It used to take
two to three hours to travel by boat from Shima to Xiamen.
With the new speedboat, it only takes less than one hour. |

I had to visit the local hospital
for a bad back pain. I saw a poster (above) of three national
leaders, suggesting that there is a legacy, or succession of
leadership. But I doubt there is a continuation of leadership.
Mao, for one, would stir uneasily when he sees all the bosses
and capitalist enterprises.
The second picture was me with
a friend in the treatment room. He is a doctor in that
hospital. (He came to see me, not treat me.)

从福州回来的当天下午，我的腰突然疼得不得了。第二天去县医院诊断，说是“腰肌劳损”，就在那里接受理疗。
上面的第一张照片是医院的一幅招贴画，画有三位前领导，似乎在说明国家领导一代传一代的连续性，。但如果老毛今天从纪念堂探起头来，看到这些老总们和他们的产业，他要不批“这是资本主义复辟”才怪呢。

All these high buildings have
sprung up since my last visit in 1995. Old temples (such as
the one in the center) are all restored or renovated.

These two picture were taken
on top of a hill in my hometown. From a deserted hilltop
with a tiny temple, it has been built into a park frequented
by locals. The local government is to praise for this.

这两张照片拍于石码高坑的“岳岭”。以前荒山野岭似的，只有一座孤庙，是小时候“远足”会去的地方。现在已经开发成一个可以吃可以玩可以锻炼身体的的山高气爽的公园，的确是当地政府的政绩。

This picture was also taken
on top of the hill, with a bird-eye bird of the township below.
The river (Nine-Dragon River) is now flanked on both banks by
buildings. In the past, the north side was almost barren,
while the south had only a few streets and a few buildings.

Service sector has grown considerably
in my hometown and is mostly staffed by people from other places.
Here is foot massaging. It lasts about one hour and costs ¥30
(equivalent of about $3.30). For each service, the girl
receives ¥12 while her boss keeps ¥18 (but the boss
provides the girl with food and shelter).

服务行业也得到长足的发展。不过，雇用的多是外地人。这里是“洗脚”，每次一小时，人民币30块。这个女孩得12块，她的老板得18块。不过，她的老板得包她们吃与住。

Just
like other cities we visited on mainland China, my hometown also
has changed a lot, for the better mostly, since my last visit
in 1995. The town has grown a lot. Paddy-fields that used
to line the roads to neighboring villages are now replaced with
buildings. Many people are doing better than before, and there
are hope and opportunities to keep. Photos on this page
are what I found to be new things since then.
