下面摘自我1993年的家书： 六月底，威拉姆特（Willamette）大学Melaney等三位老师去中国旅游。在厦门时他们受到宁之和章教授两家的接待。他们还专程去石码看望家母和庄宏，并由吴璇陪同去参观我的母校--龙海一中。回来后，他们在威大放映了旅游中拍的幻灯片。当屏幕上出现了熟悉的家乡人家乡貌时，我们陶醉了。不经眼的街巷，斑驳的瓦墙，杂乱的码头，竟然带来那麽多、那麽久远的回忆。而且因为多，因为久远，竟然忘却了那些窘迫的、寒酸的 惨淡的日子。雨后去地里挖掘被遗忘的蕃薯，课馀去树上寻找乾树枝当柴薪，赤足踏著草地上的晨霜去上学， 都成了可堪回首的记忆。 |

Thirty years ago when Liqing and I were in no position to pay our families in China a vist, Melaney and Don and their children and friends did it for us by visiting Xiamen, Shima and Fuzhou, as well as other places. After they came back, Melaney made a photo album with illustrations. She kindly allowed me to borrow the album so I can do a scanning of the pages below. She also lent me the photographs she took from the trip. What a treasure to us the Zhuang family! With help from Melanley and Don, and our other American friends, we now have three generations of ten happily living in this beautiful country. (Yes, it is still a beautiful country despite a lot of problems. Democracy will be able to correct itself, and survive and emerge even stronger--and beautiful.)
