Just like the hundred-year-old banyan trees in Dr. Sun Yat-sen's Part that I just photographed (above), life in my hometown Shima has not changed a lot. Most ordinary folks still hold on to their ¥1500 minimum monthly income, some doing the handicraft work that earned them a meager ¥50 over 31 hours. Those with money or power, or with good friends, can enjoy specialty crabs pricing at $150 per pound, or specialty tea and wine ten times more expensive. To me, hometown Shima is more unfamiliar than otherwise, even though. I grew up here until I finished high school. Today as I strolled along hometown streets, I never came across an acquaintance. With pedestrians, tricycles, motorcycles and cars, our narrow streets are getting narrower. But people do not seem to be in a hurry. They move along patiently and good-naturedly. Forty years ago, a monthly salary of ¥100 was impressive. The massage girls we met the other day are now earning between ¥5000 to more than ¥10000. (They do work long and hard hours.) So, people's living standard has improved a lot, despite the inflation--and despite the fact that our next-door neighbor salvaged every empty box we had put in the trash pin. |
