Our field trip ended before it was getting dark. We have all become grandparents, but we treasured our friendship of 40 years. We even dropped by at Dr. Zhou’s residence when we were visiting the campus. Dr. Zhou was our pediatrician when Wei was a small child in poor health. We became good friends after we learned that our family and relatives shared a lot in common. Ours was an unannounced visit, and we were a large presence, but we met with very warm reception. So warm that I later commented to our mutual family friend Ms. Wu about their extraordinary kindness and grace. Ms. Wu simply replied: because we were all children of God. |
老同事们见面，有说不尽的话。关于她们自己，她们的家人，家人的家人。当年大家还是风华方茂，如今都抱孙了。但我们都忘不了40年前的同事情谊。在嘉庚学院时，我们顺道去看望周彩萍医生。小时候庄伟体弱多病，去见周医生多了，成了朋友。谈论间，发现彼此的长辈和亲友还是同学同事，上的还是同一个教堂。见到我们这群不速之客，周医生和全家人仍然十分热情，好得不得了。当我过后对她们的善良和人品表示赞叹时，吴璇友简单地说道：大家是上帝的孩子。 |

Yesterday (11-24-2018), I was invited to a field trip by former colleagues of me and Liqing when we were teaching at a high school. They travelled from Xiamen and Zhangzhou to meet me at Shima. Our field trip included a village with ancient architecture and buildings, a magnificent Buddhist temple, a college, a recently-built beach-front residential complex in Spanish style, and an artillery fortress overlooking the Xiamen sea. Everywhere we went, we saw construction and saw progress and prosperity, and knew people are now doing well-- just like those overseas Chinese we once envied who were well-to-do when most of their compatriots in mainland China were mired in poverty and unable to feed themselves. To me, this is evidence of success of the societal and economic reforms after the death of Mao.
